If you don’t know history, it’s as if you were born yesterday, according to American historian Howard Zinn (1924–2010). Any leader may impart any knowledge if you were born yesterday.

Instead of being happy or excited with the terrible stories or situations, we do it for education and learning when we think back on the past or travel through time.

WITHIN NIGERIA has highlighted seven significant events that took place on February 17th in Nigerian history in an effort to raise awareness for educational purposes.

1999 National Assembly elections scheduled

On this date, 20th February in 1999, the elections into the two chambers of the National Assembly; Senate and House of Representatives were scheduled.

According to reports, three political parties vied for 469 seats in a bicameral legislature.

Gunmen killed first-class graduate in Anambra

On this date, 20th February in 2022, a first class graduate identified as Mr Sule Matthew reportedly killed by unknown gunmen in Anambra
Mathew who studied Information and Media Studies recently bagged first class from the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University Kano.

He was killed along with some passengers he was travelling with at Ekwulobia, a town in Anambra, news platform, PR Nigeria, where he once interned, made the announcement.

Herdsmen killed 17 persons in Benue

On this date, 20th February in 2019, suspected Fulani herdsmen in the early hours attacked Ebete, Usha ward in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State and killed no fewer than 17 persons.

The unprovoked attack on Agatu people started at around 1am when people were asleep.

An eyewitness to the attack, Daddy Seni, whose father was among those killed alongside his siblings, said he received a call from his father while on a fishing trip asking him to come back home as his father said he had been shot by Fulani herdsmen.

Bandits killed three as villagers lynch informant in Kaduna village

On this date, 20th February in 2021, the Kaduna State Government confirmed that bandits killed three people and injured one other in Kajuru local government area of the state.

In a statement on Saturday, Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan said,
“Security agencies are investigating alleged collaboration with bandits by some locals, during recent disturbing attacks in Kajuru local government area. ”

He said the sequence of reported attacks began in Ungwan Sha’awa in Kajuru local government area, where armed bandits killed one Ubangida Dogo in his home.

Bandits killed nine, abducted 17 in Shiroro, Niger State

On this date, 20th February in 2019, bandits reportedly killed nine and abducted seventeen persons in Shiroro, a community in Niger State.

Gunmen killed two, abduct nine in Kaduna community

On this date, 20th February in 2021, two people were killed while nine others abducted by bandits in fresh attacks on Baka village, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna state.

However, troops were said to have rescued 14 people, mostly women .

The bandits also attacked Kikwari village, Kajuru Local Government Area, setting a church and two houses ablaze.

The hoodlums who invaded Baka village were said to have operated in groups.

Clampdown on illegal imports of toxic electronic waste

On this date, 20th February in 2009 , the Federal government ordered Customs Service, security and environmental agencies to clamp down on illegal imports of potentially toxic electronic waste.
