  • The Chief Imam of Lekki Central Mosque has stepped into the heart of a swirling controversy, addressing the outrage ignited by a banner boldly displayed on the mosque’s fence bearing the words, “Jesus Christ is Not God.”
  • The banner that ignited a storm of outrage across social media has been replaced, following government intervention during the festive period.
  • Yet, its removal has done little to calm the fiery tempers and intense debates it sparked.

The Chief Imam of Lekki Central Mosque, Ridwanullah Jamiu, clarified that the controversial banner reading “Jesus Christ is Not God” was meant to educate Muslims about their beliefs, not to provoke or attack the Christian faith.

The banner ignited a wave of disapproval, it’s bold statement, “Jesus Christ is Not God,” struck nerves, leading to widespread criticism and accusations of religious insensitivity.

In response to the growing controversy, the Chief Imam, Ridwanullah Jamiu, addressed the matter in a viral clip, offering a detailed explanation of the banner’s true purpose.

He revealed that the message, along with others containing Quranic and Hadith verses displayed around the mosque, was intended to serve as an educational tool for Muslims.

After the banner’s photo spread widely, Imam Jamiu revealed that he received numerous calls from government bodies, including local officials and the area command, urging the removal of the banners due to the sensitive nature of the festive period.

He emphasized, however, that the decision was not born out of fear or cowardice but as a wise and intentional act to preserve tranquility and avoid escalating tensions during a time of celebration.

The Imam further clarified that Muslims hold Jesus, or Isah as he is known in the Quran, in high regard, seeing him as a revered messenger of God, but not as God himself. This theological distinction, he explained, was the foundation of the banner’s message, meant to educate rather than confront.
