The celebrity lifestyle has its many perks. From being a role model to many other people to having fans dot all over you amongst many more, it is a lifestyle that many will give anything to have and still yet can’t get a hold of in the Nigerian entertainment space.

Interesting as it is, behind the show of luxury, the class, and the showmanship, the celebrity lifestyle is also laden with many issues that makes those already in the path wish for normalcy in their lives.

On several occasions, we have seen how discussions pertaining to celebrities are attended to and can categorically say it’s mostly different from how every other conversation is handled. This treatment brings the question ‘Are celebrities beyond human errors?’

The simple answer to the question is a huge no. Celebrities are humans just like us and are allowed to make mistakes, or even dream to live a normal life, but why is that still an issue in 2023?

Following the many controversies, call outs, and how the people handle it, we feel like celebrities are put on a higher pedestal that makes other people forget that they are humans just like them and are liable to human errors. Highlighting such instances, we look at different reasons celebrities need a break in 2023.

Subject to mass judgment

One important thing to note while chasing the celebrity lifestyle is to know and understand that your life as well as personal business will be the affair of people you don’t even know. They will watch your everyday moves, see your slip ups and judge you however they feel like without consideration of what their judgment does to you.

In 2023, we feel celebrities need a break from mass judgment. Most importantly are those who have put a lot of effort into making their personal lives private.

Knowing that because they are celebrities does not mean they don’t feel things are important and we all need to allow them to catch a break from our judgment. When things that require our public scrutiny, we need to learn to be empathetic with how we go about it.

An example to this is the recent issue between Alex Ekubo and his ex-fiance Fancy Acholonu. Earlier, the Los-Angeles model had issued a public apology to the Nigerian actor for calling off their engagement, and that had caused a stir online with people dissecting the situation. While some claimed the apology was because she was begging to get back with Alex Ekubo, others speculated that they were already back together and the online apology was the condition.

In an interview, Fancy Acholonu has said her side of the story and it clearly shows why mass judgment is dangerous for and to these celebrities.

Relationship tags

Many celebrities have suffered from the masses, journalists, and bloggers likewise, simply because they were associated with someone popular.

Importantly, celebrities need a break from tags in 2023. If we are being honest, it is unnecessary and unfair to continue to tag people by their relationships rather than by who they are.

A good example for this is how bloggers have continued to refer to Jada Pollocks as “Wizkid’s baby mama” rather than “Chris Brown’s ex-manager.” For someone that has worked all her life to build a career in the entertainment industry, it is unfair to reduce her to just her relationship with another celebrity when she has achieved lots in her career as a person.

A lot of celebrities need a break from this in 2023.

Online bullying

If we choose to not talk about any other thing, it is important to keep shouting on this. Celebrities are humans too, and our actions affect them just the same. So, in 2023, the online bullying needs to stop.

Celebrities need to be allowed to express themselves without being told to be quiet because they are celebrities and shouldn’t act a certain way. Daily, we see social media users who keep trolling these celebrities just to trigger them – no one addresses that but will address a celebrity that decides to react to being targeted and constantly attacked.

A lot of people these days bank on the fact that ‘they are celebrities, they can’t do this and that’ and choose to deliberately push them, then cry wolf when they get a bit of their own medicine.

In 2023, online bullying needs to stop by all means necessary.

Conclusion

Sometimes, we wonder why celebrities are depressed, unhappy or unfulfilled. The answer is not far-fetched. The answer is not very hard. The pressure on them can be too much to handle, and if nothing at all, truly, celebrities too need a break.

In music industries all over the world, collaboration matters. It is a strong tool for tapping into a wider audience, yet, we don’t see enough of it amongst the female singers in the Nigerian music industry. For some, they believe it is because female singers, unlike their male counterparts, do not get along very well, while some also believe that it is a matter of who is ‘Queen’ and others’ refusal to acknowledge the ‘crown.’

For an industry with big names like Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Niniola, Tems, Teni, Ayra Starr,  and more female superstars, it is somewhat wasteful to not get at least a hit banger from a female link-up once every year.

On WN Picks, we looked at some female Nigerian singers whose collaboration might send the media into a frenzy, positively or negatively.

The female artists listed on this WN Picks are established artists in their own right, with a couple of hit songs in their name.

Niniola and Teni

Considering the nature of their relationship, it is absolutely surprising that the two do not have a song together just yet. They are blood sisters and the question on everybody’s lips is ‘how hard is it to get your sister on a song?’

Niniola and Teni
Niniola and Teni.

We want to believe that something is in the works, especially now that both sisters are established singers.

In an interview with Sunday Scoop, Niniola spoke about her relationship with Teni, stating how she is proud of her growth in the music industry.

“Teni is my baby sister and her success makes me proud. That is my baby doing good and I am very happy for her. That is how a big sister should feel. As a big sister, we talk every day as opposed to what some people think. Apart from music, we are blood sisters.”

While both sisters haven’t publicly stated anything about a collaboration, it is something lots of fans are looking forward to.

Tems and Ayra Starr

On the radar of the hot female singers at the moment, these two superstars sit pretty at the top. It is safe to say that their incredible vocals and badass songs earn them that spot, and their hard work and resilience will keep them there for a long time.

However, it is not uncommon for fans to do a comparison game between two artists as we’ve seen that play out in several situations. The Tems and Ayra Starr comparison have been flying around and we don’t know what to think about it other than just sit back and enjoy the gems from both artists.

Speaking about the comparison, Ayra Starr stated that she sees it as a compliment to be compared to Tems while also confirming she feels Tems is an amazing musician.

Tems and Ayra Starr

“I don’t know, it’s a compliment to me though, because I’m a young artist and Tems is an amazing musician. I just released music weeks ago, and for people to even compare me to such an amazing musician is such a compliment, and I’m so grateful and honored.”

With this kind of admiration and professional courtesy for each other, we wonder what it would be like to see the two song stars work together on a song.

Great vocals, and some bad girl vibe type of music will give a refreshing feel.

Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage

There is no way you talk about successful female musicians in the Nigerian music industry and won’t mention these two. Hit songs, they’ve done it. Awards, they’ve been there. But just one collaboration from them is what we are asking for.

For them, it’s a battle of queens. Both singers’ fan bases have always taken sides, comparing their success and thereby creating this ‘cat and dog’ relationship between them. This is most likely one of the reasons it might be hard to get both singers together on a song.

Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage.
Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage.

While reacting to the possibility of a collaboration with Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade stated her fear which was being unsure of the outcome of the song.

“When we do music, we do it so people can be happy, so when we do a song together, what are we fueling? What are we encouraging? That’s the most important question when I do collaborations, there is an aim. I think what would be would be.”

Regardless of what their fans have to say, this is still one of the top collaborations we look forward to seeing.

Asa and Simi

Asa performing on stage.

Looking from a place of deep admiration and respect, this is one collaboration that might happen soon, simply because there is no form of rivalry at all. At least, Simi squashed it when her fans wanted to start it.

Cautioning a fan from comparing her to Asa, Simi had expressed how she feels about the Nigerian-French singer.

“Asa opened the door to be able to do things that are outside the box. There was a mainstream sound, which is changing. So listening to her made me feel like I could do anything.”

Both singers have been known to be reserved with their work and have a different feel to it. Seeing them come together and match that magic would be incredible.

Conclusion

The Nigerian music industry is moving at a fast pace, with new development and sounds changing lots of things. We believe that the female singers are still not totally up to speed and collaborations amongst themselves can boost the long walk to world dominance for them.

Anikulapo, Kunle Afolayan’s tale of love turned to hatred by betrayal was released on the 30th of September, 2022 to an audience that highly anticipated the release of the Yoruba epic, and just, as usual, the Nigerian filmmaker did not disappoint with the delivery of the film.

It goes without saying that Kunle Afolayan is one of the best filmmakers in Nigeria and Africa, especially because his films are well planned out and also because of his utmost attention to detail.

Anikulapo was no different from his other portfolios of amazing movies. In fact, Anikulapo turns out to be a masterpiece with brilliant storytelling, acting, the setting, and with every other thing that makes a movie great.

In this article, we will look at the film from the standpoint of finding love in a hopeless place, that love tested by betrayal and eventually becoming hatred.

Was Saro Ever In Love?

Getting killed because of ‘a partner’ might be seen as true love by many, but in the case of Saro, we can easily conclude that he was just controlled by lust and thereby found himself in an unforeseen circumstance.

Anikulapo - Saro beaten after being caught having an affair with Queen Arolake
Anikulapo – Saro beaten after being caught having an affair with Queen Arolake.

The story of Saro follows a young man who was given away at a tender age to pay the debt of his parents. It is safe to say he has seen suffering and he knows what suffering tastes like. Coming to Oyo Ile was supposed to change his trajectory, which it did. He allowed himself to be caught in the web of Awarun who only wanted pleasure but not a commitment to him. This part of the film revealed how Saro’s mind is shaped.

He was portrayed as a man who would settle for anything as long as it made him feel good, or made his life better. It showed a part of him that will do anything for a comfortable lifestyle.

Again, his willingness to settle came into play when he jumped back into Awarun’s lap in excitement because she linked him up with a big opportunity in the palace of the king of Oyo Ile. This will be his first undoing.

Saro and Awarun in Anikulapo

Going to the king’s palace changed the direction of the movie.

He met Arolake who needed saving from the miserable life she was living in the palace, and he did save her for a while but was that action out of love?

Love Turned To Hatred By Betrayal

For Arolake, we might never be able to tell if she truly loved Saro and the argument would be that you can never hurt someone you truly love no matter what they do to you, but in the end, Arolake did Saro dirty and left.

In her case, it will be the saying of ‘a woman scorned’ and she was patient enough for him to change but instead, he kept on disrespecting her.

Firstly, he raped their maid and got her pregnant, claimed it was for their own sake – made that decision on his own without having a discussion with her on it – and secondly, he went ahead to marry another wife after claiming the first was a mistake. It was worse that he did all that, but those wives started to disrespect Arolake because of the things Saro had told them about her.

She was back in the same prison she escaped in Oyo Ile. Only that in this prison, she was not her husband’s favorite.

The betrayal hit her badly when she overheard some of their workers talking about Saro asking for the king’s daughter as the price for waking the prince who just died. Her heart was shattered like everyone else would have been, and she decided to leave, but not before ruining what made him the man he was.

Anikulapo - Saro asking for the Princess of Ojumu as a price to wake the Prince
Saro asking for the Princess of Ojumu as a price to revive the Prince.

It was the case of “if I have to live like a miserable person for the rest of my life, you also will be miserable,” and she made sure of it.

While Arolake was the real definition of a boss lady who knows what she wanted and will get it, Saro was the greedy “what my hands cannot touch, I will draw closer with a stick.”

Overtaken By Lust

Lust is one of the things that can ruin a man so easily and the plots of Anikulapo made that very obvious.

Apart from being with Awarun in Oyo Ile, Saro was already putting things under control. He had the life he wanted as an Aso Oke weaver and he was doing well for himself until he allowed lust to derail him.

Let’s assume that was a mistake on his side, and he was lucky enough to get a second chance.

Saro got to Ojomu village and met grace there in the form of the gourd. He was given everything he wanted, but again, he allowed lust overtake him, throwing it all away, first in Arolake’s face – who saw the gourd and handed it to him because she trusted him – and also in the king’s face – who did not know him from anywhere but allowed him to stay in the village and gave him a place to live.

Arolake pouring the content of Saro’s gourd away in Anikulapo

It was the classic case of ruining his life simply because he allowed the satisfaction of minutes to rule him, thereby pushing him to make the wrong decisions.

Conclusion

Anikulapo portrayed life in the ancient Yoruba kingdoms and the little failings that crippled the system. It showed the influence of power and how it makes humans arrogant, and through brilliant storytelling, it taught a simple lesson; to never put all your eggs in one basket.

Popular Nigerian singer, Asake has been on fire this year, going from one hit song to another. So far, it is safe to say that he does not have a bad song, and rightly so is able to back it up with facts, especially with the release of his first studio album, ‘Mr. Money With The Vibe.’

From ‘Mr. Money’ featuring Zlatan & Peruzzi to ‘Loaded’ the yet-to-be-released single with Tiwa Savage, the lyrics of his song about having many disciples is now a reality. But his rising popularity is not what we are here to discuss.

In this article, we will talk about Asake’s album, ‘Mr. Money With The Vibe,’ highlighting the ‘vibes’ and the songs with tendencies of being hit songs on the album.

The Perfect Intro

The first thing Asake did right on Mr. Money With The Vibe is thinking through the proper intro to use for the song, and ‘Dull’ did justice in that aspect.

In the Yoruba tradition, it is imperative to pay homage before anything. Asake did that on the opening song, firstly paying homage to the elders and assuring us all that he would not be dull, while also stylishly chipping in how Olamide gave him exposure, as well as him being elevated to the high status.

The deep meaning and interpretations of this intro makes the album even more satisfying to talk about.

Songs With Tendencies Of Being Hits

What is an album without hit songs?

Mr. Money With The Vibe was released to an audience that had been patiently anticipating its release and there are songs that immediately became hit tracks or with tendencies to become one.

Organise

“We were at a party the second day after the release of the album and the DJ played Organise. Everybody at the party was singing along to the song like it’s been released for a long time. Asake needs to cut soap for us.” Adeola, an Entertainment PR expert said to me during a phone conversation.

This reaction was not from her alone. Organise is one song that has been played almost everywhere since the release of the album. It is also dominating charts all over the world, so it is safe to say it is a hit already.

Joha

Joha is another song on the album that has already started to do numbers.

Asake as usual with his Amapiano styled beats finished work on this song, especially with several street slangs infused into the song, making it catchy.

Joha, as revealed by Asake in an Instagram post also has its own dance step.

There are other songs on the album that are likely to be hit tracks but these two so far have been taking in numbers and increasing in popularity among his fans.

Songs That Are Already Hits

A couple of tracks were on the album that had been released as singles before the album was released, and we will all agree that ‘Terminator,’ ‘Peace Be Unto You (PBUY),’ and Sungba Remix’ were all hit songs upon release and right up to the release of Mr. Money With The Vibe.

Asake was strategic enough to include these songs in the album, helping to push the album in terms of promotions.

As it is with everyone who knows what they are doing, the singer has continued to establish his presence both home and abroad with his different style of music.

Conclusion

Amapiano with an infused pint of Fuji is not very common in the Nigerian music industry. Choosing to do that is really creative of Asake and so far, it is working well for him. The question, however, is for how much longer? And will his style influence a new style that has come to stay in the music industry?

In the Nigerian Music Industry, there are kings and there are kingmakers. One name that we can all agree can confidently assume both roles is YBNL boss, Olamide.

Coming from an artist who gave us several hit songs with incredible albums in his name, Olamide has somehow transitioned from being just an artist to a label boss who pushes those signed under him to stardom.

Whenever a conversation like this comes up, the first and most important question people ask is “how easy is it to build your own musical career and build others too?”

Unless the 33-year-old rap icon wants to explain how he has been doing it over the years to us, we might never be able to figure it out. But to some of us, this skill and foresight is something worthy of study.

In this article, we will look at the artists that Olamide was able to push from the ‘upcoming’ status into the spotlight as well as those whom the power of his feature helped boost their musical career.

Lil Kesh

In 2014, Keshinro Ololade, popularly known as Lil Kesh became a superstar. Prior to this, he had success on his single titled ‘Lyrically’ which made waves in Nigerian universities but his affiliation to YBNL immediately changed the trajectory he was heading.

After signing with YBNL, Lil Kesh dropped a series of hit songs including Shoki – which Olamide himself featured on the remix, winning Lil Kesh two awards as well as topping charts – Efejoku, Gbese, and his debut studio album titled ‘Yagi.’

Nigerian musician, Lil Kesh
Nigerian musician, Lil Kesh.

Talking during an interview, Lil Kesh revealed how Olamide found him and how the song ‘Lyrically’ was made.

“Baddo finding me was pure grace. I was never in the industry, attending shows and hoping to meet artists. Fam, I was in Bariga when I got the call from Baddo and it all came from ‘Lyrically.’ I downloaded the beat online because I had no money and recorded on it.”

So far, it is safe to say the best years in Lil Leah’s musical career were between 2014 to 2016.

Adekunle Gold

For someone who loves everything creative, Adekunle Gold can be said to have paid his dues. His rise to stardom in 2015 was not a mistake. He worked his way through it, first with his cover of One Direction’s ‘Story of my Life’ which he titled ‘Sade’, and then his first official single through YBNL titled ‘Orente.’

Creating a path for success with his previous songs, Adekunle Gold released his first studio album in 2016 which had sixteen songs and big production names such as Masterkraft, B Banks, and Pheelz on it.

Adekunle Gold

Also, the album peaked at #7 on the Billboard World Album Chart for the week of 13 August 2016.

In an interview, while promoting his album shortly after leaving YBNL, Adekunle Gold spoke very highly of Olamide as well as YBNL and the impact the two had on his musical career.

“YBNL moved me. I had Sade before YBNL and it was already getting popular. When I got signed to the label, we shot the video and it became a sensation everywhere. Getting signed to YBNL took me to London for the first time. That was in 2015. So, YBNL changed everything for me. I am grateful to Olamide for all the support and inspiration.”

Fireboy DML

All that was needed to show Fireboy DML’s talent to the world was an appearance on YBNL Nation’s collaborative album in 2018 titled ‘Mafia Family.’ The song titled ‘Jealous’ was then re-released in 2019 to an already buzzing fan base Fireboy DML has built due to his brilliance on the song and affiliation to YBNL. Since then, his story has not remained the same.

He released ‘What If I Say’ with the video directed by TG Omori and then his debut studio album titled ‘Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps’ with no guest feature but managed to get 6 million streams on Spotify three days after its release.

Fireboy DML

From the artist who sang ‘Jealous’ in 2018 to his best hit track so far titled ‘Peru,’ Fireboy DML has enjoyed stardom.

In a Twitter post made by Fireboy DML in 2021, the singer praised Olamide while also calling him the ‘Greatest of all Time.’

“Forever grateful to Baddo for being such a good human being. da Goat 4L.”

Asake

If you live under the rock, you would have heard about an artist called ‘Ololade mi Asake.’ He is one of the hot sensations in the Nigerian music industry right now with a series of hit songs like Sungba, Terminator, Omo Ope, PBUY, amongst others.

Coming from his single with Zlatan and Peruzzi in 2020, to who he is now, there are several arguments about the influence of Olamide on his music.

Asake

Asake continues to drop music sweet to the ears. His first EP, ‘Ololade Asake’ had four songs on it and they were all great songs. He followed it with his first studio album, ‘Mr. Money With The Vibe‘ which has dominated streaming platforms’ charts all over the world.

In a tweet posted on Asake’s Twitter page, he recounts how Olamide changed his life.

“One call from Olamide and everything changed.”

The Power Of Olamide’s Features

Recently, when popular Nigerian singer, Zlatan Ibile heaped praises on YBNL boss, Olamide, we all could relate to it. After all, Baddo as he is fondly called didn’t just help artists signed to his label alone but also used his influence on songs with others to push them into the spotlight or help them build a wider fan base.

Some of those artists include Zlatan Ibile, Phyno, Bella Shmurda, and Portable.

Phyno – Ghost Mode

Phyno in all his right was already doing good for himself, especially with a feature of his song ‘Multiply’ with big names like Flavour, Timaya, and M.I, but a feature with Olamide exposed him to a wider fan base, especially in the western part of the country where Olamide is regarded as ‘the king of the street.’

Ghost Mode won the Best Collabo at that year’s Headies Awards.

Zlatan Ibile

Recently, Zlatan Ibile was seen in a viral video praising Olamide for helping his musical career and many others without bragging about it.

“My song, first song, he called me on phone on Instagram, took me to another state. Till I was recording I didn’t believe I was going to record that song. He changed my life, he changed my career till today.”

Although Zlatan Ibile has been singing before his encounter with Olamide, his breakthrough was when Olamide featured on ‘My Body.’ This song was so big and one would have thought it gave the singer the inspiration to keep going stronger.

He has released more hits songs since then.

Portable

Portable and Poco Lee in the video of Zazoo Zehh.

You might not know the name ‘Portable’ but there is no way you are current with news in the Nigerian Music Industry and you don’t know ‘ZaZoo Zehh.’

Portable is one of those street singers that has been doing his own thing for quite a while but with a small fanbase on his social media platform. It took only a verse from Olamide on a remix of the song for Portable to become a nationwide sensation.

Ordinarily, his affiliation with the YBNL boss alone has opened lots of doors for him with big artists in the industry as well as music promoters.

Conclusion

In the Nigerian Music Industry of today, there is no way you talk about the living legends and not mention the name of Olamide, primarily because of his talent as a musician and also because of his ability to spot talent and nurture it till it grows.

From being called ‘the king of the street’ to making kings on the street, Olamide is a force in the industry.

The Headies Award over the years has suffered a decline, from having issues of credibility to the production of the award. The 15th Headies Award recently done in Atlanta, United States, however, was anticipated to be different and bring the old glory of the prestigious award back but has also failed to do so.

When the location of the 15th Headies Award was announced in March, it was met with lots of criticism from people, mostly with concerns about why an award meant to celebrate Nigerians will be held outside of the country. In response to these criticisms, Ayo Animashaun, CEO of Smooth Promotions stated that people will thank him later for that decision.

“I always resist the urge to explain myself because those who won’t get it won’t get it. All y’all who don’t understand why the Headies is holding in Atlanta this year will thank me later.”

Looking at the ratings of the award by viewers, we doubt if there are many things to thank Ayo Animashaun for.

With a look into how the 15th Headies Award went, these are the things we feel could have been better, and those who were actually better.

What Could Have Been Better At The 15th Headies Award

Accountability with time – It is a stereotype that Nigerians do not know how to stick to time and the delay exported with the 15th Headies Award showed that, especially in how the show was organized. Like a two-hour delay was nothing, the Headies also did not see any reason to apologize for the delay.

In their defense, they quickly whipped up a half-baked fashion show to keep their audience entertained.

The Red Carpet Host – The Red Carpet should not be so hard to coordinate for someone who knows what they are doing.

Apart from the red carpet space being so small, there was just one host as well which led to guests having to queue at the red carpet. As if that was not bad enough, the host also did not seem like he had control of the red carpet. He seemed clueless while he continued asking every guest what brought them to the award show.

Terrible Hosting – The host of the show was a total disaster. We have never seen a host as uninterested as Anthony Anderson at the 15th Headies Award.

All night, all he did was made tasteless jokes while also not missing the chance to be condescending with most of his jokes. Apart from that, he successfully messed up most of the names and still made more jokes about that as well. He then crowned it all with a jab at Headies, insinuating that the award was taking too long and he wanted to go home.

Osas Ighodaro on the other hand was just there acting as a substitute for her co-host. One would have expected that she would take charge but she was not able to. To be fair to her, she did laugh at some of Anthony’s terrible jokes and covered up for a couple of flaws with the hosting.

What Was Better At The 15th Headies Award

Better Performances – Coming from the point of mediocre performances over the years to some of the performances we witnessed this year at the 15th Headies Award, there has been an improvement.

The audience was thrilled to have a night of great music with a live band supporting the artists, and delivering decent live performances.

Some of the artists that thrilled at the award are BNXN, Asake, Lojay, and Ruger.

Better Acceptance Speeches – There was a major improvement in this aspect than with any other aspect of the award, and it is safe to say this is the best we’ve witnessed so far.

First of all, I want to thank God. He’s the reason I’m here. He’s the reason I’ve come this far.

“Big Thanks to the Headies. Big shoutout to my team, most especially, my partner and my manager, Alexander Okeke, and for the crew and the technical guys working tirelessly around the clock to make the show look good, and for everyone out here supporting Afrobeat.” – Olamide

Most of the artists were honest with their speeches, and we saw the excitement as well from first-time winners such as Goya Menor and Ibejii.

Promoting Afrobeats – Whenever we say Afrobeats to the world, taking an award that honors the genre of music to an international stage is one of the things we mean and the 15th Headies Award was successful with that.

WITHIN NIGERIA ushers you into the weekend with hilarious jobs or roles that suit the personality of some of your favorite celebrities based on their physique and lifestyle.

1. Ninolowo Bolanle – Bouncer

Nollywood actor, Ninalowo Bolanle aka Makanaki aka Nino B is no doubt a fine actor but will make a seemingly finer bouncer.

Ninalowo Bolanle

Nino’s mere stride with dark shade and six-packs will make anyone who want to cause a nuisance at a club thinks twice.

2. Wizkid – Model

Wizkid

Starboy Wizzy is a music star but his personality and lifestyle oozes that of a K-drama model who is everyone’s favorite.

Wizkid

Big Wiz would obviously be a proud model who unbuttons his tops to show his chest while walking the runway, leaving young ladies drooling and crushing over him.

3. Tiwa savage – Video vixen

Tiwa Savage

Nigerian songstress, Tiwa Savage would suffice as a hot video vixen. Giving off sexy vibes and making millions as one of the most sought out vixens.

4. Don Jazzy – Sugar Daddy

Mavin boss, Don Jazzy is a man of many talents. Nigerians didn’t know his true character many years back since he had always loved staying hidden but he is all up in our faces now, promoting up-and-coming acts, dropping funny videos and steaming contents.

Don Jazzy

Maybe if the Don wasn’t the boss, his personality will fit into that of a sugar daddy. I mean- he’s the boss, a rich one, single and well-loved.

5. Portable – Bus conductor

Nigerian singer, Portable’s role can be easily guessed since one can easily tell from the manner he delivers his songs. He would no doubt be an ‘agbero’ — a bus conductor who always tells passengers to ‘enter with their change’.

Portable

6. DJ Cuppy – Wig vendor

Billionaire’s daughter, DJ Cuppy barely needs an introduction. She is an obvious lover of colour pink and a soft life. If she wasn’t into music, she’d do well as a brand ambassador for a hair company or even as a wig vendor.

7. Davido – Hype-man

Davido

OBO is a baller that will fit perfectly into the ‘hyping’ job. Music star, Davido with his croaky voice will make the club go wild the minute he picks up the microphone to hype with his vast knowledge of popular slangs. Tule jor!

8. Simi – School teacher

Simi Announces New Album
Simi

Nigerian singer and AG baby’s heartthrob, Simi should be a primary school class teacher with her personality and lifestyle. Singer Simi Shuts Down Pregnancy TalesSimi no doubt has an angelic voice but going through her choice of cloth, petite stature, hair style, voice; she would be the kids favorite teacher.

9. Mr Macaroni – Gigolo

Police Threatened To Kill Me –Mr Macaroni
Mr Macaroni

Comedian and activist, Mr Macaroni is a ‘freaky’ master in his skits, but if the tables were turned he may as well be a gigolo.

Macaroni

This time, he’s the one going for older richer women.

10. Ric Hassani – Choir master

Music star Ric Hassani’s face card is a regular meme on twitter but it doesn’t mean he wouldn’t pass for a choir master with his well-tailored suits and his style of music. Ric would be the reason single sisters are never late to choir practice nor church on Sunday. Ladies would always want to sit in front to catch a glimpse of the choir master lead a ‘spirit filled’ song.

11. Burna boy – Drug baron

Grammy winner, Burnaboy barely needs an introduction. His personality and lifestyle would sell him off as a drug baron or drug dealer. Burna BoyBurna would no doubt get a taste of what he sells and his whole organization dare not cross him because they know he’s the big bad wolf with his tattoos, huge necklaces, bodyguards and roll of weed.

12. Oxlade – Tatoo artiste/ Pornstar

Oxlade is a well-loved music star and might be a lover boy based on his music but he already gave himself away as someone who will definitely do well as a porn star. Oxlade could also excel as a tattooist and pink lips balm promoter. Think about it.

Aṣa who has been in the music world for over a decade won the hearts of many till today through her debut album Aṣa (Asha) in 2007; followed by Beautiful Imperfection (2010); Bed of Stone (2014); Lucid (2019) and now V (2022).

As many Nigerian artistes are gaining recognition recently in the international scene, Aṣa’s visibility storming the music world does not just start today.

The name, Aṣa is well known by many and it has become a household name for music lovers other than her name, Bukola Elemide.

The Nigerian-French singer, songwriter, and recording artist surfaced with the release of her new album, “V” on the 25th of February, as a welcome back gift to her music lovers after going on a 3 years break.

On the 11th of October, 2019, the internationally recognised singer released her album Lucid with “The Beginning” as one of the hit songs.

In the career path of the sensational artiste, one thing as a routine of hers is the gap of years in between when she released an album and years of coming back from the break with another album.

Her new album, according to her, was written entirely in front of the water and that contributed greatly to the songs as she sound so calm.

Is it that Aṣa is recently in love than before as her new album preaches more love than she’s known for to be diverted?

The voice behind Eyo, Be My Man, Bamidele, Fire on the Mountain on the fire, Jailer and more inspiring socio-cultural songs have been gaining momentum ever since.

The 10 songs in her latest album, V lasted for 30 minutes but does it depicts more of her music policy and potential?

The initial release of IDK, Ocean, Mayana off the album gave an insight into what the album is.

CARRIED AWAY BY LOVE

Larger percent of this in her new album differentiates her from the Aṣa known for a pattern of the song. With the likes of Show Me Off, All I Ever Wanted, Morning Man, IDG; Love Me or Give Me Wine project Aṣa to have likely switched on to the commercialisation of her being from the ‘all rounder’ Aṣa.

The sensational singer expresses her mind in various diverse through her new project featuring Amaarae. The “All I Ever Wanted” track enlisted all she wanted from her lover. Aṣa has always been a preacher of love and this does not exclude her expression in this.

“Baby, I wouldn’t let you. All I want is to make you be my own till you fucked it up… Make me feel like say I dey on top…”

Being carried away with love, she questioned the attitude of her love to ask, “Shoti gbagbe nii (Have you forgotten) the way we were before now?”

Love was written all over her face until she wonders if she was the only one

BELIEVER OF WHEN THE GOOD TIMES IS

Just like the Believe track, she was able to find her way around the song content with her delivery.

In her collaboration with The Cavemen, the subject matter of the track, Good Times focuses on society’s lovely hate for another; the beautiful awful love shown by those close to people.

“They say, blood is thicker than water, some friends are loyal than brothers.”

She prays to live long with her friends, forgiving her for the wrong she does.

She places more respect, honour, care and love for friends than the family who prefers to chase one away

CELEBRATION OF OTHER ARTISTES

The album also celebrates other artistes featuring her.

The appearance of one of Nigeria’s biggest boys in the music industry currently, Big Wiz spiced the album of Aṣa. It has always been expected by music enthusiasts that the duo sings together.

She had said in an interview recently, “With Wizkid, there’s a friendship. Before the music, we sit down, we have a drink and just talk about all kinds of things— animals and normal things about his life. And The Cavemen! Oh my God, they are full of energy. They are amazing people, so the collaboration came from a natural place.”

The IDG song was released off the Aṣa’s V album and had many getting the song listened to. This is the first time both musicians will be featuring each other.

The 3 mins songs had the duo systemically flow in the afrobeats swiftly.

MORNING MAN, SHOW ME OFF

The guitarist characterised her love in what looks like shooting her shot in the Morning Man track of the album.

The love, the affection, the memory, the feeling towards her man reflect in her lyrics and composure in ensuring she wins his heart.

This is a very unusual act by Nigerian and African ladies at large to ask their opposite gender out just like every other foreign-based woman.

Aṣa goes beyond the usual to ensure she becomes the reason why he smiles every day. It appears her man has been jilted before she walked in but will her encouragement, beautiful words of love make him love again?.

Since she claims to know what her Morning Man wants, becoming the woman that he wants seems to be very easy for her.

No love is as beautiful as showing one another. Exactly, this is what Aṣa calls only requires from her Morning Man after fulfilling her part of making him be love again.

Part of her lyrics, “Show me off. Show me to the world. I wanna live it up with you. Live my life with you.” denotes what she wants from the man that mesmerises her merely looking at his face.

A perfect display of that from the sensational singer projects the voice of many ladies who always want to be seen everywhere with their man as a point of reference to “I was there with you through thick and thin.”

Just like every average lady, she doesn’t appear to someone who is meant to be restrained inside for others not to be seen.

HEARTBREAK RUINS LOVE, CARRIED AWAY BY THE OCEAN

If not any other song, a particular one that gives Aṣa a moment of sharing her bittered love life is the “Nike” track in the V album

Aṣa was able to bring into life the general and well-known word among Nigerian youths of today, breakfast.

She ate her national cake of the breakfast on the level of her prominence. It is a replication or reference to how individuals known gets into the media more when heartbroken compared to a random fellow.

“You say you love me, still you break my heart.”

The song is an emotional song made for heartbroken ones to reminisce about their former love style. It carries the embodiment of pain and cry. She demonstrates the shattered heart like plate broken by a child which cannot be mended anymore. She asks, if she will ever be in love as she ends the song, “You say you love me, now you break my heart.”

Undoubtedly, she showcased what she carries in the album by diverting and picking a new gape of lyrics. She was able to infuse afrobeats and reggae, jazz genres in the album with flows of beautiful lyrics.

The V album is the definition of who she is as she does not want to do another ‘Jailer’ nor does she want to do another ‘Bibanke’.

In an interview with Africa Apple Music, she revealed, “I wanted to be inspired, and I wanted it to be real.”

One of the successes of Aṣa’s 2022 album is that it becomes her debut work project she will be working with other artistes. She was able to feature Wizkid, The Cavemen, and Amaraae.

Aṣa who is a songwriter, recording artist, and one of Nigeria’s most exposed musicians is, however, perceived not to have been putting much in recognition and collaboration with her fellow Nigerian artistes who do something similar to her genre of music.

The V album, however, languished to be rated high on its discography. It failed to maintain the velocity in the Aṣa (Asha), Beautiful Imperfection, Bed of Stone album days.
